A home is comfort.

Who is getting excited about decorating their fall porch? I get it- technically it is still summer. There are plenty of end of season changes here in northern Vermont despite the days filled with late summer heat. Canada geese float in flocks on the ponds. The dew is heavier in the morning. In place of the bright yellow flowers on the pumpkin vines are plump, green orbs, barely tinged orange. In no time, we will be decking out front porches with those gourds along with pots of mums, cornstalks, and maybe a fresh doormat.

Now that fall is creeping in it is the perfect time to add a bit of the season to the inside of your home, too. My philosophy has always been that I want to let the seasons in my home evolve slowly, just like the seasons outside.  Trickling in autumn themes and design can happen in a variety of ways to add comfort as the days grow shorter and wind a bit chillier. For display on the dining table, try adding autumn colored candles to the warm tone of the Colonial house in walnut. Drape a knitted throw over the sofa to entice you to snuggle down for movie night. Slip dried grasses into a vase, planter, or the copper chimney of Hauskaa Cottage to feature on a mantle or coffee table. A sense of glowing warmth emerges from some small touches that feels homey.

Every season offers a fun excuse to refresh your home. You can start to embrace the fall month ahead slowly and intentionally, savoring every moment. Subtle touches that give a nod to nature will update your space for the changes on the thermometer and ease everyone in your household into the season.
